The first podcast that I watched was Ira Glass discussing the building blocks of storytelling. We were all taught in high school that there is a topic sentence and a list of arguments that you discuss below that topic sentence and that will be your building blocks in storytelling. Ira Glass said that broadcasting is totally different, there are two main building blocks. The first building block is anecdote, which is a sequence of actions. Think of a story in it's purest form. The anecdote builds momentum and it builds anticipation because it makes you wonder what is going to happen next. It's raising a question from the beginning. It's implied that any question you raise is going to be answered. You also throw out questions to keep people listening to your story. The second building block you have is a moment of reflection, which is explaining the point of the story. The final thing that he states is have the perseverance that both of your building blocks are both presented well. The second podcast that I watched was a Radio Lab interview on the Colbert Report. The Radio Lab is a public radio experimenting telling stories in a different way. They choose complicated subjects they don't understand sometimes. They try to make sense of them by having fun and making mischief of it. They have non-knowledge to a little bit of knowledge to becoming not really knowledgeable of what they are doing. Some examples of the questions that they ask are "What is time?" and "Does evil really exist?" The differences in these two podcasts are in the Ira Glass podcasts there is no into music, there is no outro music, no background music, no sound effect, the location sound is in the radio office, the audio is cut at 5:22, there is only one character and that is Ira Glass, and Ira Glass introduces himself. There is intro music in the Radio Lab podcast, there is outro music as well, there is background music, there is sound effects as well, the location sound is at Stephen Colbert's studio, there is no audio cut, the characters in this podcast are Jad Abumrad & Robert Krulwich the creators of the Radio Lab, and Stephen Colbert introduced them. The similarities of these two podcasts are they both broadcast and present stories but, they present stories in a different way, Radio Lab thinks outside the box and adds flavor to the stories where as the Ira Glass podcast is very dull and goes by the book when telling stories.
